Early in the medieval period simple tunics were worn belted at the waist by both men and women. Whereas in Tudor times, kings and queens set the fashions, in voluminous gowns with slashed sleeves and large neck ruffs.
Intricate gowns with square necklines and ridged bodices were worn by women, gents wore equally elaborate garments including embroidered knee length coats, breeches and tricorn hats.
Early Victorian fashion featured large puffed ‘leg-o-mutton’ sleeves and full crinoline skirts. For men the three piece suit was made fashionable with matching jacket, trousers and waistcoat.
The ‘Roaring '20s’ saw 'flappers' in knee length dresses covered in fringing, lace, feathers and sequins. Men favoured pinstriped suits worn with a homburg or Trilby hat and two tone shoes.
Outfits for this period include original military uniforms from the Army, Navy and RAF. There are also nurses, land army girls, civilian day wear, evening wear and sportswear.
The 1950’s saw ladies wearing full skirts held out with petticoats and tops with low-cut necklines. Long slender overcoats with velvet collar and cuffs were worn by the Teddy Boys.
White go-go boots, mini-skirts and trouser suits in psychedelic prints. Black and white 'Mary Quant' dresses, Mods, Rockers, Velvet suits, shirts with frilled collars and wide patterned ties.
The era for platform shoes, high waisted bell bottomed trousers, maxi dresses in floral patterns. Men wore stylish three-piece suits, characterized by wide lapels, wide legged or flared trousers, and high-rise waistcoats.
Shoulder pads, Leotards, Goths, Converse boots, Mullets, Hawaiian shirts, 'Hammer pants', Avaiator glasses, Denim jackets, 'Doc Martin' boots and Punk style made for a diverse era in fashion history.
